چکیده

Context effects occur when the phonetic perception of an acoustic signal is modified by the surrounding phonetic context. Two experiments were conducted investigating visual context effects on the perception of acoustic speech tokens. In the first experiment a visual bilabial articulation [ibi] was paired with synthetic acoustic tokens from /iri/ to /ili/ continua. In the second experiment a visual [aba] was paired with tokens from synthetic /ara/ to /ala/ continua. Listeners were asked if they perceived the disyllables as containing an [r] or [l]. We found that auditory-visual identification functions were associated with a shift toward more [l] responses compared to auditory only identification functions. These data are important for developing and testing models of auditory-visual context effects in speech perception.

Carcass traits and physical characteristics of eggs in Japanese quail as affected by genotype, sex and hatch

The effect of genotype, sex and hatch on carcass traits and physical characteristics of eggs was investigated in the Japanese quail. Two strains of Japanese quails including the White (P1) and Wild (P2) genotypes were chosen as the parental generation and crossed reciprocally (10 single-pair mating) to create the F1 progeny. The F1 birds (27 males and 81 females) were mated randomly to produce ...

Acoustic Source Characteristics, Across-Formant Integration, and Speech Intelligibility Under Competitive Conditions

An important aspect of speech perception is the ability to group or select formants using cues in the acoustic source characteristics--for example, fundamental frequency (F0) differences between formants promote their segregation. This study explored the role of more radical differences in source characteristics. Three-formant (F1+F2+F3) synthetic speech analogues were derived from natural sent...

Effects of sesame seed meal and bambaranut meal on growth, feed utilization and body composition of juvenile African catfish Clarias gariepinus

Plant proteins are plausible fishmeal substitutes but are deficient in some essential amino acids (EAA) like lysine and methionine. Combination of different plant proteins with complimentary EAA could be useful alternative. Bambaranut (Voandzeia subterranea) contains high amount of lysine while methionine is in sesame seed (Sesamum indicum). This experiment tested effects of combining sesame se...

Contributions of F1 and F2 (F2') to the Perception of Plosive Consonants

This study examined the contribution of F1 and F2 alone on the perception of plosive consonants in a CV context. Applying a 3-Bark spectral integration the F2 frequency was corrected for effects of proximity either to F1 or to F3, i.e., was replaced by F2’. Subjects used a two-dimensional Method of Adjustment to select the F1 and F2 consonant onset frequencies that led to a subjectively optimal...
